BEAUTY INTERNATIONAL DÜSSELDORF sends Positive Signals

Posted by Daniela Knoll on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 @ 22:23 PM

Beauty always sellsBeauty always sells - and this was proven by BEAUTY INTERNATIONAL DÜSSELDORF which closed on Sunday.  Trade fair head Werner M. Dornscheidt was very pleased with the way the trade fair went: "I see this year's BEAUTY INTERNATIONAL as a positive sign demonstrating that not all sectors are affected by the current crisis and that it is not all bad.  At the same time, exhibitor and visitor numbers show that BEAUTY INTERNATIONAL is firmly established as the leading event for service cosmetics in the sector. This is not least due to the comprehensive specialist and further training programs only offered to this extent and with such variety in Düsseldorf." On the three days of the fair a total of 51,000 trade visitors from 44 countries came to BEAUTY INTERNATIONAL to gather information on the range offered by the 1,050 exhibitors and brands in the cosmetic, manicure, pedicure and wellness segments. http://www.beauty.de/

Do I need to speak German to successfully attend a trade show in Düsseldorf?

Posted by Daniela Knoll on Fri, Mar 20, 2009 @ 22:21 PM

The short answer is no. Düsseldorf has a reputation as a very international city and is very accommodating to the multitude of international visitors it gets each year.

In Germany and across much of Europe, English is the new "Lingua Franca". From an early age, children in Europe are taught several foreign languages in the course of their schooling, usually beginning with English. As a result, even non-native English speakers will rely on English to get around other non-English speaking countries!

Serving as a host to tens of thousands of international guests each year, Düsseldorf goes to great length to assist its visitors from abroad:

  • Signage in the airport and on the fairgrounds is posted in German, English and occasionally French.
  • All the show managers and information-desk hostesses at Messe Düsseldorf speak English and a variety of other languages.
• Messe Düsseldorf's accessible on-site electronic exhibitor catalog "KATI" also gives visitors an option of many languages.

Having someone among your booth personnel who does speak German will, however, give you an advantage. A German client will prefer to conduct business in German, whenever possible, so it's important to be as accommodating as you can. Taking the time to speak the local language will also help earn you respect among potential clients.

To overcome any language barriers at the trade fair, here are a few tips:

  • Speak slowly and clearly for your potential customer, and try to eliminate slang and jargon.
  • Have some of your pamphlets/product literature translated before the show.
• Hire a translator! They can help you out at your booth and can smooth out any difficulties between language and culture.

Outside of the trade fair, however, pick up a language guide and try to teach yourself the basics. Though many of the restaurants and local businesses are used to international guests, not every waitperson or shopkeeper can speak English fluently. Plus if you are with the locals, they will value your effort trying to learn their language.

On business entertaining in Düsseldorf

Posted by Daniela Knoll on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 @ 22:15 PM

During the trade fair, you can spend a lot of time with clients at your booth, but it's equally important to conduct some of business off-site and outside of the trade fair setting. The simple gesture of treating them to dinner is a signal that shows serious intent, and it's wise to follow-through on any invitations issued either by you or to you.

One may find the Düsseldorf Altstadt (Old City) to be almost as busy in the evening as the trade fair grounds were during the day. Düsseldorf caters to most any type of palette, from traditional German fare to Global Cuisine, from a modest Beer Garden to high-end dining. A good resource for local restaurants can be found on the Düsseldorf Marketing & Tourismus website.

Of course, one should keep some basic etiquette in mind while dining in a foreign country:

  • Wait for the host before you start to eat or drink.
  • Make eye contact before and after raising the glass in toast.
  • Never use your fingers. This goes for French fries as well! Always use utensils.
  • When not eating, keep your hands visible, resting on the table.
  • Water/Drinks are not complimentary. They must be ordered separately.
• Don't expect coffee during the course of the meal. It is always served after.

When the meal is done, tipping is another one of those cultural nuances that can be difficult to grasp. A few items to take into consideration:

  • Service Charge is already included in the bill.
  • If you feel the service was good, it's ok to tip an additional 5-10% of the bill.
• Tip your waiter/waitress directly; don't just leave it on the table.

While it's easy to spend a good portion of your visit on the fairgrounds and in your hotel, it's important to include some local flavor into your business. It will leave a more lasting impression for both you and your clients. As they say in German: Guten Appetit!
