How “healthy” are health apps? What can they actually do for you?

Posted by Anne Meerboth-Maltz on Mon, Oct 20, 2014 @ 10:37 AM

With the multitude of new medical apps coming on the market, it’s tempting to just download them on our smartphones and tablets without further “ado”. But how good are these apps when it comes to our health? What defines a high-quality mini application in this field? How can these apps really help us? Consumers are overwhelmed by the sheer choice of apps and often end up downloading many but then not even using them. That’s why experts will discuss the topic of medical apps at the MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM held during the world’s largest medical trade fair, MEDICA (November 12 - 15, 2014 in Düsseldorf, Germany). The forum will demonstrate for example how apps can be used to ensure that medications are taken on time by generating reminders. Or how they can be successfully implemented in a company environment by helping employees leading healthy lifestyles. Something we can all use!

MEDICA 2014 will also deal with apps that can improve the care of hospital patients. The topic “ISV – Information Scarcely Visible?” will be addressed at the 37th German Hospital Conference. In hospitals, touch screens are already being used to display a full range of information but this often includes too much information since generally, a chief physician requires a different set of information than a nurse. An iPad app should make this easier since it is configured in such a way that the users only see what they actually need. This means one app for many professional groups but with its own individual settings for each occupational sector involved.

Apps can also be used for more cost effectiveness in the health sector, especially when it comes to a patient’s lengths of stay in a hospital. An app determines the maximum length of stay until a standard fee is applied by showing green, yellow or red signal lights. This should make work and operational procedures easier for both doctors and nurses. And this helps patients as well – a hospital stay is stressful enough!

At the live MEDICA App COMPETITION, the best app used in the daily routine of doctors and hospitals will be selected. App developers from around the world submit their apps and 15 pre-selected apps will then be presented on November 13, with a top-class jury selecting the winner. More information is available at http://www.medica.de/app_competition1.

So make sure you know which health apps to download – and actually use! Attend MEDICA 2014 this November. http://www.medica-tradefair.com offers great tools to prepare for a visit.

The market for smart phones and tablet computer Apps is booming.  What appeared to be nothing more than a gimmick even a couple of years ago is now coming of age.  Apps may not only revolutionize the private healthcare market, some of them also have the potential to influence how we deal with medicine at home, in hospitals and in medical practices.

MEDICA 2012 in Düsseldorf (November 14-17) will provide an overview of the latest health industry app trends and some sample applications.

Parallel to exhibits on display, the App Circus will be incorporated as a program element into the accompanying MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM (organized in cooperation with “dotopen”).  At the App Circus, innovative health apps will be presented by their creators with the goal of bringing developers, start-up companies and the organizations involved in the software development together with potential users and project partners from the medical sector and on the purchasing side.

Industry experts involved in the concept believe that major and exciting opportunities particularly in the areas of prevention and treatment adherence exist, and could be particularly App-ealing to the health insurance industry (lazy pun intended - feel free to groan).  Some examples of App technologies underway:

  • Patient self-adherence to medicine dosage regimens / dosage reminders / medicine compatibilities
  • Patient self-treatment in the home directed remotely by a doctor
  • Hospital, nursing facility, and private practice access to specialized apps to view up to the minute patient information and treatment data

The above examples show how the development of new Apps for the health sector is an exciting and vibrant topic.  The presentations of new solutions will certainly provide plenty to talk about once again at MEDICA 2012.

Visitor entrance tickets for MEDICA 2012 will be available for advance purchase online starting in August 2012 at http://www.medica.de/2130.
