MEDICA 2013 Blog: Are Doctors Becoming Redundant?

“Telecoaching”, “Quantified Self”, “Life Logging” and “Body Tracking” are only a few of the key words for the constantly growing market of eHealth applications. Most of them have been established in the private domain and their functionality is still rather questionable. With the motto “You are your own doctor”, apps and eHealth applications are providing more and more support for patients and physicians are increasingly confronted with this topic.    docs resized 600

Therefore the question “Are doctors becoming redundant?” will be part of the agenda of the MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM. This forum will be part of the world’s largest medical trade fair, MEDICA, to be held in Düsseldorf, Germany with more than 4,500 exhibitors (November 20 – 23, 2013). Klaus Juffernbruch of Cisco Systems – Internet Business Solutions Group, will lead the discussion about “Are doctors becoming redundant?” at the MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM on Friday, November 22 at 11:00 am (in Forum 1).

MEDICA12 JV14694    In addition to the discussions there will also be the opportunity to check out new apps – with “hands on” approach: The “AppCircus” as part of the MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM will give an overview of the current app trends and exemplary applications while the “AppGarden” lets visitors try out various mobile health apps.

Could a doctor’s visit become a thing of the past? The number of applications for smartphones and tablet PCs that predominantly deal with the topic of health in the private domain is exploding. The A.T. company consultant Kearney has projected that the market for healthcare services with mobile technologies will triple until 2017. It will grow from approximately Euro 900 million in 2012 to Euro three billion in 2017. The most important segment with regard to turnover is hardware (mobile sensors and devices). However, an almost endless number of applications are decisively increasing the value of the devices from the consumer’s perspective.
