MEDICA 2013 Blog: Are Doctors Becoming Redundant?

Posted by Anne Meerboth-Maltz on Fri, Nov 8, 2013 @ 12:34 PM

“Telecoaching”, “Quantified Self”, “Life Logging” and “Body Tracking” are only a few of the key words for the constantly growing market of eHealth applications. Most of them have been established in the private domain and their functionality is still rather questionable. With the motto “You are your own doctor”, apps and eHealth applications are providing more and more support for patients and physicians are increasingly confronted with this topic.    docs resized 600

Therefore the question “Are doctors becoming redundant?” will be part of the agenda of the MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM. This forum will be part of the world’s largest medical trade fair, MEDICA, to be held in Düsseldorf, Germany with more than 4,500 exhibitors (November 20 – 23, 2013). Klaus Juffernbruch of Cisco Systems – Internet Business Solutions Group, will lead the discussion about “Are doctors becoming redundant?” at the MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM on Friday, November 22 at 11:00 am (in Forum 1).

MEDICA12 JV14694    In addition to the discussions there will also be the opportunity to check out new apps – with “hands on” approach: The “AppCircus” as part of the MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM will give an overview of the current app trends and exemplary applications while the “AppGarden” lets visitors try out various mobile health apps.

Could a doctor’s visit become a thing of the past? The number of applications for smartphones and tablet PCs that predominantly deal with the topic of health in the private domain is exploding. The A.T. company consultant Kearney has projected that the market for healthcare services with mobile technologies will triple until 2017. It will grow from approximately Euro 900 million in 2012 to Euro three billion in 2017. The most important segment with regard to turnover is hardware (mobile sensors and devices). However, an almost endless number of applications are decisively increasing the value of the devices from the consumer’s perspective.

Health Apps will target 500 million users by 2015 - MEDICA 2012

Posted by Anne Meerboth-Maltz on Thu, Sep 20, 2012 @ 12:18 PM

Mobile devices have the potential to become powerful medial tools thanks to the continued development of health and wellness apps – a sector which is expected to have 500 million users by 2015. Always on the forefront when it comes to medical innovations is MEDICA, the leading international medical trade fair held annually in Düsseldorf, Germany (www.medica-tradefair.com). To promote the further progress of medical apps, MEDICA recently partnered with AppCircus, the world’s largest travelling showcase of apps, to launch the “AppCircus on Health with MEDICA” online competition to find the best health and wellness apps. So far, four apps have been chosen to compete at the event:

Doctoralia allows users to quickly locate medical professionals and centers, check the opinions of other users, filter searches according to specialties or insurance companies and arrange appointments online.

PhysioForm brings together some of the most recent innovations for tablets and smart phones for patients, physiotherapists and personal trainers. The app helps the physiotherapist or trainer to get a better understanding of their clients’ needs with information in real time to help them to achieve their health and fitness goals.

VitaDock is a solution for tracking vital data for diabetes, hypertension/hypotension, fever and obesity, giving the patient the ability to manage and monitor them in one app.

Symptom Tracker is an application for people to monitor their health by keeping a record of any symptoms when they are feeling unwell and share the symptoms with their health care provider which helps them give the patient fast, better, accurate and timely care.

Both standalone and apps requiring external devices are accepted. Every month a jury of experts as well as a public vote on the website will choose the two apps that will participate in the upcoming AppCircus@MEDICA 2012 (November 16, 2012 in Düsseldorf) where they will all compete to be chosen as the best health app.

The winner will receive a nomination to the Mobile Premier Awards which will take place in February 2013 in Barcelona, Spain. The deadline for September submissions is September 23, 2012 and end of October 2012 for the October registrations.

Good luck – we hope to see you at MEDICA 2012 from November 14 – 17, 2012 in Düsseldorf, Germany!

MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM with App Circus

Posted by Ryan Klemm on Fri, Jul 13, 2012 @ 10:19 AM

mr bertini welcome1

The market for smart phones and tablet computer Apps is booming.  What appeared to be nothing more than a gimmick even a couple of years ago is now coming of age.  Apps may not only revolutionize the private healthcare market, some of them also have the potential to influence how we deal with medicine at home, in hospitals and in medical practices.

MEDICA 2012 in Düsseldorf (November 14-17) will provide an overview of the latest health industry app trends and some sample applications.

Parallel to exhibits on display, the App Circus will be incorporated as a program element into the accompanying MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM (organized in cooperation with “dotopen”).  At the App Circus, innovative health apps will be presented by their creators with the goal of bringing developers, start-up companies and the organizations involved in the software development together with potential users and project partners from the medical sector and on the purchasing side.

Industry experts involved in the concept believe that major and exciting opportunities particularly in the areas of prevention and treatment adherence exist, and could be particularly App-ealing to the health insurance industry (lazy pun intended - feel free to groan).  Some examples of App technologies underway:

  • Patient self-adherence to medicine dosage regimens / dosage reminders / medicine compatibilities
  • Patient self-treatment in the home directed remotely by a doctor
  • Hospital, nursing facility, and private practice access to specialized apps to view up to the minute patient information and treatment data

The above examples show how the development of new Apps for the health sector is an exciting and vibrant topic.  The presentations of new solutions will certainly provide plenty to talk about once again at MEDICA 2012.

Visitor entrance tickets for MEDICA 2012 will be available for advance purchase online starting in August 2012 at http://www.medica.de/2130.
